SOROPTIMIST INTERNATIONAL OF DOUGLAS
ISLE OF MAN

Soroptimist International of Douglas (IOM) was formed in January 1952, and received its Charter in April the same year.   The President's badge illustrated above is made up of the Soroptimist logo, the national symbol of the Isle of Man, the three legs,  and an enamel insert featuring the Tower of Refuge which stands on a rock at the entrance to Douglas harbour.

The Douglas Club belongs to the Soroptimist International Federation of Great Britain and Ireland (SI/GBI) and is one of the 22 clubs within the Federation which form the Region of North West England and the Isle of Man.     It began with 25 members.   Now the Douglas club has over 60 members.

SI of Douglas works within the Soroptimist International Programme Areas at both local, national and international level.

• One of the  Club's main projects is to provide bursaries for women who wish to learn a new skill or up-date existing skills to enable them to return to the work force.
• Another favourite project of SI Douglas is that of Five-O, a project in vocational training for women and girls in developing countries.   Project Five-O is administered jointly by  the world's leading women's organisations,  the aim being to establish vocational training centres where women and girls are trained in income generating activities so that they feel they are making an economic contribution to their own communities and are therefore regarded as more valuable members of their community.   Four times in the last few years SI of Douglas has entered into an agreement with the Manx Government's Overseas Aid Committee whereby the Committee meets the club's contribution pound for pound and has helped to train women in Bangladesh, Madagascar, India & Sumoa
• In addition, each year the club supports many local charities and international projects including the Quadrennial Project.

International Goodwill and Understanding forms an important part of Soroptimism and over the years SI of Douglas has made Friendship Links with several clubs throughout the four Federations of Soroptimist International :-

SI Douglas meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 8.00 p.m. in the Hilton Hotel, Douglas, Isle of Man.
