SOROPTIMIST INTERNATIONAL (SI) is a world wide organisation for women in management and the professions, working through service projects and through international goodwill and understanding, to advance human rights and the status of women. The first Soroptimist Club was formed in 1921 in Oakland, California. The first Clubs in Europe were chartered in 1924. The Soroptimist world continues to grow and now SI is the world's largest classified service organisation for women with around 100,000 members in over 3,000 clubs in 122 countries spread across the four Federations -

SI joins forces with other international women's organisations in Project-Five-O which supports vocational training for women and girls in developing countries and countries in transition.
Every year on 10th December (Human Rights Day) to mark Soroptimist International Day, members donate money to the International President's Appeal which is used to help women in extreme poverty.
Membership of a Soroptimist Club is by invitation with members being representative of a wide range of occupations in business and the professions. Any Soroptimist can attend meetings of any Club anywhere in the world and can also participate in meetings and conferences world wide.
